Refugio de Peregrinos de Miraz: Plans for the Future

Artist's impression of the refuge and the completed extension (with thanks to Willie Bossert)
The existing refuge opened in 2005 has provided shelter for over 8500 pilgrims. It has gained a well deserved reputation for hospitality and friendliness and integrated well into the village of Miraz. The numbers of pilgrims who wish to stay at the refugio has shown a steady increase during the past 5 years to the point where it is difficult to accommodate all. The original improvements made by the Confraternity to the facilities at the refuge are no longer adequate to meet the needs of the increased numbers, hence the need for a new extension.
The benefits of the extension will be
· Additional beds.
· Double the floor area per bed for pilgrims.
· Additional shower and toilet facilities.
· Separate shower and toilet facilities for men and women.
· Improved facilities for hospitaleros.
· Provision for people with disabilities.
· Extra room for refugio and pilgrim equipment.
· Compliance with current planning regulations.
· Additional kitchen and dining room space and facilities.
· Improved space heating and water heating.
· Increased standard of existing building. The builders have already started work and we expect the extension to be completed in June 2010, with further alterations to the original building in 2011. For progress so far click here.
