News from the pilgrimage routes

Portuguese Route - warning received 21st March 2011

Subject: SAFETY-ALERT! Stage 1, Caminho do Este de Portugal

Dear Amigos,

Since this week we were informed about a dangerous situation of the bridge between Manta Rota
and Altura. Many pilgrims and tourists on foot and by bike were forced to go back without any warning,
not in Manta Rota and not in Altura!

Because of heavy rainfall in last winter (2009-2010) this bridge was heavely damaged. Only with
wooden shelfs the bridge could still be used to pass this river. In 12 months time it was not safely
repaired!

After last weeks heavy rainfall, this bridge (or what was left from it) does not exist anymore.
Now we have a hole of, at least 50 m2 (10x5) and at least 2 meters deep, without any previous
warning. We consider this a dangerous situation for people walking or cycling on Stage 1 of the
Caminho do Este de Portugal or the Ecovia.

People walking or cycling without warning of course are more then surprised if they come to a
none existing bridge. Tourists and pilgrims have to walk/cycle back to the next crossing/round about
in Manta Rota or Altura, to continue their walk or cyclingtour by the EN125. These at least  2 or 3 kilo-
meters extra, can not be considered a good tourist-service for the Algarve.

Because of this dangerous situation we advise our pilgrims on the Caminho do Este de Portugal, to
walk or cycle from the round about in Manta Rota (near the old Alisuper Supermercado) to go left
to the EN125 until the first round about in Altura. Here go right and after 500 meters you can follow
again the yellow arrows.

We hope that this information can avoid any accidents!!!

Kind regards,
Associação Amigos do Caminho do Este de Portugal (ACEP)
