Rome: the Early Church: a Pilgrim's Guide
Howard Nelson, The Confraternity of Pilgrims to Rome, 2011, 60 pp, 1 map, ISBN 978-0-9568499-9-8.
This guide is based on a series of articles in the Confraternity of Pilgrims to Rome Newsletter and is the first in what we hope may develop into a series of CPR Pilgrim Guides to Rome. It is written for the pilgrim who has arrived in Rome and has allowed him or herself enough time to explore a little of its Christian history.
This book is spilt into 2 sections plus appendices:
Part 1 covers the Practicalities, how to obtain your Testimonium, what maps and guides to get, pilgrim accommodation, transport, worship in English, and how to get home.
Part 2 the Guide is the core. It covers Peter and Paul, the early Christians and the catacombs, Constantine and churches founded in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th centuries, up to the conversion of the first pagan temple (the Pantheon) to Christian use.
The Appendices contain a reading list, Sigeric's Churches, the Seven Churches of Rome and a list of the early churches not covered in the guide.
The information about each church is written from a historical perspective and although it gives some architectural and artistic detail its heart is in the history and archaeology of the church.
