Australian Pilgrims' Page
A sudden rush of enthusiasm has prompted us to list events in alphabetical order, by city. Delighted at the interest this page is generating, but we're still dependent on you, in Australia, for items: send them in to the Webmaster! |

Melbourne
There are about 50 people in Melbourne interested in the Camino (as we call it), meeting monthly for food and wine. About 8 of us have walked various routes to Santiago, and the others are tempted.
The date and location change each month but is typically the 3rd Friday in an inner city restaurant.
We are not a formal group in any sense, but a gathering that seems to be growing quickly by word of mouth, stories and pictures of pilgrims personal journeys.
Garis Alexander <garis.alexander*gmail.com> is the contact if others are interested in conversation. To reduce spam, we're gradually removing direct e-mail links from this site. Camino de Santiago course
Confraternity member Marc Grossman, a specialist French and Spanish language teacher for senior high school students and adults, now regularly holds a workshop course at the EASTERN SUBURBS COMMUNITY COLLEGE (www.escc.nsw.edu.au), Sydney.
The course is a «hands on» workshop style presentation where each participant learns to metaphorically and figuratively walk the walk through space and time with some pedagogically appropriate cut and paste exercises. The feedback from course participants has been positively overwhelming.
Outcomes of the course are:
1. To understand and appreciate the magnetic pull and magical attraction this pilgrimage walk has on contemporary Europeans and non-Europeans alike.
2. To appreciate the historical, geographical, religious and cultural context of the CAMINO.
3. To understand the current practices and etiquette of being a modern day pilgrim including the pilgrim passport registration or credencial system and what is required to legally obtain the Latin certificate called the Compostela on reaching Santiago de Compostela including the refuges existing to welcome bona fide pilgrims .
4. To learn the basic principles of the Spanish language with specific reference to using that targeted language when doing the CAMINO.
5. To know what to do for the physical preparation of one's body and what to take and not take in one's backpack and know what to do when physical problems may occur to one’s feet when walking the CAMINO. In other words: know the preventive measures that are in the pilgrim's control and how to avoid major problems.
Marc is happy to provide further details (grossmanmarc*hotmail.com) [to reduce spam, we've removed direct e-mail links from this site. Details of the latter are on their website. And please feel free to contact Sandra Collier.

“The book takes the reader through the family’s 450 kilometre physical and emotional journey which is taken on foot and by tradition without any planning! Pilgrims have endured this ancient trek for some 1500 years. The family find more than a history lesson however and are faced with their own courage and determination and the strange and mystical ways of the Camino”.
Jonathan won the Messenger Marketing Award at the 9th Annual Australian Authors and Publisher's Bookshow in November 2007 for The Way of a Thousand Arrows.
Jonathan writes vividly and evocatively and would like to share his view of this wonderful family journey through his insights and photographs.
