Canberra
From Ian and Liz Palmer
We have walked the Camino Francés several times and have recently moved to Canberra and are interested in making connections with CSJ members in this area. Could anyone who is interested in sharing their experience and meeting up contact us on 02 6299 3920 ?
Ian Palmer
Melbourne
We have over 80 people in Melbourne in our email list interested in the Camino (as we call it), meeting monthly for food and wine. A growing number, perhaps over 25 of us, have now walked various routes to Santiago, and others are tempted. Nearly everyone seems to be walking somewhere and eventually the lure of a Camino proves irresistible.
The date and location change each month but is typically in an inner city restaurant on the last Friday of the month.
We are not a formal group in any sense, but a gathering that evolves by word of mouth, with stories and pictures of our personal journeys.
Garis Alexander <garis.alexander*gmail.com> is the contact if others are interested in conversation. To reduce spam, we're gradually removing direct e-mail links from this site. Perth
News of the establishment of a Camino in Australia: the Dom Salvado Camino in Western Australia. This route leaves Perth and follows the route taken by Dom Salvado in the 1860s to establish Australia’s only monastic town at New Norcia. The route is 125km; it starts at St Joseph's Church Subiaco, passes churches and cathedrals, the banks of the Swan River, the Walyunga National Park, Muchea, Chittering, Bindoon and finishes on the sixth day at the Benedictine town.
Dom Rosendo Salvado was born at Tui in Galicia and at 15 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of San Martin in Santagio. He took his final vows in 1832, and came to Australia in 1846 to establish a Benedictine Monastery at New Norcia. He died in 1900 while on a visit to Rome. His body was returned to New Norcia three years later and buried in a tomb of Carrara marble behind the altar of the New Norcia Monastery.
Message received June 2011:
"The Australian Camino Salvado is taking registrations for two walks this spring:
You can discover the historic and cultural aspects of the Pilgrims Trail, while experiencing the Wildflower Trail at it's best. We start in inner-city Subiaco and travel to unique New Norcia, the Heritage Listed monastic town on the Victoria Plains. We follow natural features at a relaxed pace and pass through iconic West Australian landscapes - rivers, valleys, woodlands and downs.
Sun 21st Aug - Sun 29th Aug
Sun 4th Sept - Sun 11th Sept
Each pilgrimage has a maximum of 24 walkers and the cost in 2011 is $800. Registration covers all accommodation, transport, and generous meals and snacks. Luggage is sent direct to accomodation and walkers carry only a daypack and water.
See www.caminosalvado.com for more info and to book your place.
Last year we had many walkers practising for the CSJ and some of the elderly ladies were just amazing. I do hope you meet some of our West Australians. The older they get, the more inspiring they are."
