Introduction: how to search the catalogue

The Library Catalogue is now (as of 1 March 2006) held on-line, searchable via each of the buttons above. The complete index to the Confraternity Bulletin is included as part of the Catalogue.

To search by Author, enter Surname, First name into the search box - e.g. "Mullins, Edwin" (without the quotes). If you are unsure of how the cataloguer might have handled a particular name, click on the first letter of the surname, below, to see an alphabetical listing of all surnames beginning with that letter. Accents were omitted from Author headings in the original version of the catalogue, but are gradually being put back. If in difficulty, try searching first without, then with accented characters.

To search by Title enter the first significant word(s) into the search box. Initial articles ("The", "A", "El", "Los" etc) in the major languages of the catalogue (English, Spanish, French, German, Portguese, Gallego and Italian) are disregarded for the purposes of this search, so the search term "History" will return both "The History ..." and "A History ..."

Clicking on the Search by Keywords button will return a list of all the subject headings used in the catalogue, from which you can then select the one that interests you - so you don't have to guess what subject terms we might have used.

The Full Text search looks for search term(s) in the author, title, series name and keyword fields. It returns all occurrences of any of your terms, so can produce long lists. Results are sorted by relevance.

The Advanced search also works on the whole entry, but enables you to apply Boolean logic: you can look for all entries that contain any of a set of search terms, or only entries that contain all of your search terms (cf. Google: the initial search finds any of your terms, the advanced search on the next page narrows it down by looking for pages that combine all of your terms).

Some tips

Publications by local governments (e.g. the Xunta de Galicia) are entered under the name of the region (e.g. GALICIA, Xunta de; NAVARRA, Gobierno de). Publications by the authorities in Santiago, whether religious or secular, are entered under SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA.

Periodicals are generally listed both under the body responsible and their titles.

The index to the CSJ Bulletin has now been merged with the catalogue, but very few analytic entries for items in other collective works or periodicals have been made; look under the names of editors and/or bodies responsible, or journal titles.
