Refugio de Peregrinos de Miraz: Fundraising Appeal

Introduction to the Appeal

In late May 2005 we took on the Refugio de Peregrinos de Miraz ... a great responsibility, and also an opportunity for all pilgrims to repay the gifts they have received from the Camino.

The bottom line?  We need to raise £100,000 / US$160,000 / €140,000 to finance restoration and the initial running costs. And we need your help to get there!

Phase 1 of the work, in 2005, initially involved providing new beds and other essential household equipment, as well as cleaning and painting.  Over the winter, some re-wiring was carried out and work started on the plumbing and drainage.  A new borehole was dug and the refuge now has its own water supply.

Phase 2 in 2006 included treatment of the roof timber, further rewiring and conversion of a bedroom into additional washing and toilet facilities and treatment.

To be going on with, here are some before and after pictures ...

The major task of Phase 3, which we hope to complete by the next Holy Year in 2010, will be to increase the accommodation by building an extension.

We are launching this appeal to all our friends and supporters, throughout the world.

We’ve adopted the image of the Gaitero, a Galician bagpiper, as the emblem of our fundraising programme and you’ll soon be able to see him marching towards Santiago  as pound by pound, dollar by dollar, euro by euro, we get closer to our goal!  For every £125 raised he will get one km nearer to Santiago.

He's three-quarters of the way there - 600 km from his starting point, and with only 200 km to go! The Miraz Appeal has reached £75,000, and your generosity to our gaitero has helped him through these winter months as he's been making his way along the coast between Cudillero and Ribadeo. He's about half-way between Luarca (see his postcard below) and Navia. The days are gradually getting longer, but the wind off the Bay of Biscay can be pretty sharp, and he still needs your help to complete his pilgrimage: help him on his way!
