May's book club will discuss this anthropological look at the Camino's massive growth since the 1980s. Nancy Frey is a  celebrated academic in the Camino community, having walked it several times herself.  She now lives in Galicia.

In Pilgrim Stories, Frey illustrates the hopes, discontents and desires of the pilgrims she spoke to as part of her intensive fieldwork, finding that they often feel estranged from society in some way and are able to connect with a new community, and get to know themselves better.  Another recurring theme in her research was this self-reflection often led to making significant life changes upon the return home: an artistic voice is discovered, a marriage is ended or meaningful work is found.
