Join us to celebrate St James’ Day at St Mary’s Church, Sulhamstead, Berkshire (RG7 4ED) on the first stage of the St James’ Way from Reading to Southampton.

The village of Sulhamstead Abbots is very close to junction 12 of the M4 near Theale. Or there are frequent trains from Reading or Newbury to Theale, from where you can walk a couple of miles to the church or ask for a lift! We’ll start at 10:30am with teas/coffees.

At 11:00 will be a workshop on music traditional to the Camino and pilgrimage with the CSJ choir!  Come and have a go at singing some beautiful music along with the CSJ choir. There will be a workshop on music traditional to the Camino and pilgrimage, as well as some other short pieces. No experience or music-reading ability required. Bring your partner or family for an interesting and stimulating experience.
Alternatively, there will be a short circular walk on offer, taking in part of the St James’ Way.

At 1pm will be a bring-and-share lunch at the church. Bring whatever you’d like (please advise of dietary requirements) and we can share it round the group.

At 2pm, there’ll be a stimulating talk from one of the local priests to the area on the Camino and the 900-year-old Reading Abbey.

From 2:45pm, pilgrims will have the option of socialising, exploring the gardens, the church and its displays and literature on the St James’ Way – including the all-important pilgrim stamp for your credencial! You’ll also be able to go on a circular local led walk or a short walk to nearby St Peter’s Church with the opportunity to have a go at ringing the unusual peal of 4 bells! Tea and cake will be served back at St Mary’s from 4pm.

At 5pm will be a celebration of the Camino with words and music, featuring performances of the songs rehearsed earlier in the day, at St Mary’s.

At 6pm, there’ll be an albergue-style communal curry supper for those that can stay, which can be ordered and paid for during the day ending at 7pm.

Please bring cash for the meal and donations to St Mary’s are encouraged.

If you would like to join in the celebrations, please let the office know by Friday 8th July, if you have any dietary requirements and add if you’ll need a lift from/to Theale station.

Email the office here to let us know you'd like to come.
We hope to see many of you there!
