St James Parish Church
4th Camino Pilgrim – Surrey Group Meeting
Below are details of our next meeting in Elstead, Surrey:
11.30am Meet at St. James Parish Church which is in the middle of Elstead village, where we will be shown round by the Church Warden, Sarah Goodship (07901667257) who is also joining us for lunch.
The ruins of Waverley Abbey are nearby. This was a Cistercian monastery which was the first Cistercian house to be established in Britain and was founded by the Bishop of Winchester in 1128 and provided shelter for pilgrims, although it is south of the North Downs Way which goes from Winchester to Canterbury. The monks served as priests for St James Church which was built in 1138.
Further along the River Wey at Moor Park is Mother Ludlum’s Cave. She was a hermit about whom there are many legends. A spring was recorded there in 13th century. This is said to have been used by the monks when their original spring dried up.
