The Pilgrim Record is a valuable document. It enables you to access the pilgrim accommodation either provided by the church, the municipalities, Associations of Amigos or private individuals. Some accommodation has a modest fixed price, some establishments rely entirely on donations from their pilgrim guests. The Pilgrim Record does not bestow the right to accommodation which is either provided on a first come first served basis or booked in advance. Pilgrims are expected to respect the 1000 year old traditions of hospitality along the many routes to Santiago and to behave respectfully to other pilgrims and the hosts/hospitaleros. It is expected that the pilgrim will be making their way to Santiago, either directly or over time in stages. In order to qualify for the Compostela you must complete at least the last 100km on foot or on horseback, or 200km by bike . If you complete any distance above this you may at the Pilgrim Office request a Certificate of Distance which can state your starting point and distance covered.
