A long overdue update to the route so many Pilgrims call the Tunnel Route and which follows the Roman roadway to and through the San Adrián tunnel in the Basque mountains. This is a route that feels off the beaten track. It has been used by Pilgrims since the 10th Century, becoming by the 12th Century the most important pilgrim route to Santiago and by the 18th Century this route had given way to the trade route of the Camino Frances.
This book offers walkers detailed route guidance through the ancient towns of Segura and Zegama, passage through The Tunnel, a descent to the plains of Álava province, through Vitoria and at Estavillo a choice of walking on Santo Domingo de la Calzada (via Haro, the Rioja capital) or west towards Burgos via the Pancorbo Gorge. Both of which are on the Camino Frances.
Tim estimates this to be a 9 to 12 day route and at an intermediate level for Pilgrims looking for the road less well travelled yet connecting to the Camino Frances for all those continuing on to Santiago.
